This page restates Shopify Help, “Payouts and settlement times with Shopify Payments in Canada”, fetched 23 September 2026. It is not tax, legal, or banking advice. Opening a Shopify store still requires a Shopify account. Recheck the help page before you open one. Card-rate percentages are not on this help page. It tells you to read the Canada plans and pricing page, and the rates in your own admin, for fees. This guide does not copy those rates.
Shopify defines settlement time as the time between the moment a customer’s payment is captured and when those funds are available to be sent to your bank account. The capture timestamp is recorded in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
In Canada, the minimum settlement time is 3 days. When you begin receiving payouts, your settlement time is longer. As you reliably fulfill orders on time, it can decrease to that regional minimum. A new store should not treat 3 days as the time that applies on day one.
There is no minimum payout amount for Shopify Payments in Canada. Payments captured on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are consolidated and sent as a single payout. You can’t receive payouts on weekends or public holidays.
You can set the payout schedule to daily, weekly, or monthly. Shopify says that choice does not change the per-transaction settlement time. When you switch from one schedule to another, pending payouts are delayed until the next applicable payout date under the new schedule. The page says to avoid frequent schedule changes so payouts are not delayed.
Shopify’s note on the same page: although the funds are sent promptly, they might not appear in the bank account immediately. Typically, banks require 24 to 72 hours to process and deposit the funds. That is Shopify’s statement about banks. It is not a promise that every Canadian bank takes three days.
With Shopify Payments in Canada, you can receive payouts in Canadian dollars on all subscription plans. If the store is on the Advanced plan or the Shopify Plus plan, you can receive payouts in multiple currencies. The currency a customer pays in can differ from the payout currency. The subscription is a separate spend. This help page does not print the plan price, so this guide does not either.
If your default payout currency is your domestic currency of CAD in Canada, Shopify says you will not incur Multi-Currency Payout fees. The currency table on that page lists CAD with bank-account locations in Canada and the United States, marks domestic currency as yes, and marks the Multi-Currency Payout fee as no. The same table lists USD with those bank-account locations, marks domestic currency as no, and marks the Multi-Currency Payout fee as yes.
If you choose a non-domestic currency as the default, Shopify says payouts are charged a Multi-Currency Payout fee that depends on your location and Shopify plan. Its example is Shopify Payments in Canada with USD as the default currency. This help page does not print that fee as a percent. This guide does not invent one.
If you add bank accounts for payouts, Multi-Currency Payout fees apply based on location and plan. Orders placed in a currency that is not set up to receive Shopify Payments payouts are paid to the default-currency bank account. If that account is in a non-domestic currency, Shopify says you incur a currency exchange fee. You are not charged extra fees for orders in your domestic currency paid to a bank in your domestic region, even when domestic currency is not the default payout currency.
The fees section says Shopify Payments fees depend on location and can vary. It points to the Canada plans and pricing page for the breakdown by plan. It also says that, once Shopify Payments is set up in Canada, the rates for that store are in the admin under Settings, then Payments, then Manage, and in the Shopify Payments terms shown there. Those admin figures are not on this public help page, so they are not repeated here.
